Couldn't even get the thing to blow up
And it's not that I don't know how to blow things up. Give me a beach ball or a sleeping mat and I'm fine, but this thing just wouldn't take air.
Also, in the pictures it looks like it has a white front, but the front is clear. If I could get it to work, I imagine it would be a bit more effective than a bare bulb pointed directly at an object, but no better than bouncing a bare flash off a ceiling.
I've used the Lumiquest hotshoe softbox and it is totally worth the extra $10. Pass on the Opteka.

Very handy softbox
This is a very handy softbox, which fit every external flash.
Though it isn't super effective, it makes fx drop shadows softer.

Didn't last long...
This diffuser is a great idea for storage and travel reasons. I used it for about three weeks and was very pleased with it until last week when I opened the air valve to deflate it. The vinyl was weak around the base of the valve and tore a two-inch gash up the back of the diffuser. Ruined. :o( I am waiting for a response form Customer Service to see if they will replace it. I really enjoyed it while it lasted... 2010-01-18

Works all right
Works all right but doesn't fit smaller flashes like Nikon SB-400. The collar is too big and can not hold it on the flash well. Other than that it does what it supposed to if you don't mind its weird look. 2009-12-13

Great if you do not care how it looks
It depends, if you want to look great then go ahead and spend $50 and up, and the end result will be the same as with this thing.
If you want great results and do not care how you look inflating and carrying this diffuser around, this diffuser is for you.
Works great, makes soft diffused light from your flash.
Best used in portraits.
