OK for air travel, not for heavy SLRs
I've owned the SLIK compact XL tripod for 4 years. The PLUSES: it is versatile, compact (under 15 inches long), fairly lightweight (fits into my carry-on luggage) and stable for smaller cameras (point&shoot digital cameras, and smaller SLRs with short (and lightweight) lens.). The NEGATIVES: it gets unstable ad may even topple over if you use it for larger SLRs with heavy lens (longer than 200mm or so), with the twist-type lock and 4 retractable leg joints per leg, it takes a long time to set up (the twist-lock is also less secure than the flip-lock).
Overall, great for smaller cameras and to pack on trips, not good for larger cameras.

Good Value
I have been pleased overall with lightness and versatility. It really is very light. If you are taller then you may be dissapointed in the height fully extended. 2007-01-12

Great Travel Tripod
This is a very handy travel tripod.
Lightweight and compact, it is easy to carry.
I wish it would extend a little taller, but otherwise, great.

It's an OK tripod but---
Fully extended it is too short for someone 6'1" tall. Takes too much time to set up full extension. Will not be used much because of this. Nice size when compacted. Is about what I expected for the money! 2006-11-07

Slik Compact-XL Travel Tripod
This is a well-built and sturdy tripod. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that when folded it is a little longer (15 inches) than I would prefer. Slik did make a more compact tripod that folds to about 9 inches in length, which I find to be more convenient, but that tripod appears to no longer be available. 2006-08-09
