Beware!
Awesome camera!! Doesn't work when you get sand in it though! Be more careful than I was! 2009-08-04

Don't buy!
Just got off the phone with Canon customer support rep. I bought this Canon camera after many years spent happily using Nikon cameras and I don't think I will ever by Canon again. The camera died (won't turn on) only after 14 months, with the warranty JUST expired! What I heard is that Canon is offering to repair the camera (average repair price is $99 + shipping) or to buy a refurbished model (choice is: SX11 @$125, SD890IS @$150 or SX10IS@200) with only 90 days repair warranty. What a deal! Nice job, Canon, you lost me!

this camera certainly looks nice, but...
I was very pleased with this camera initially. Smart design, fairly decent photos as long as there is adequate light.
Within 3 months of purchase, it stopped focusing right. Things were noticeably blurrier than they had been originally and the macro focus stopped working altogether. After one year, the dreaded "lens error" comes up most of the time when I turn it on. (google it, it's a fairly common problem with this particular model)
Because I use this camera mainly for snaps of things I sell on ebay, it really never leaves the house. I have taken extremely good care of it. Never dropped it, always keep it in its case, free of dust, lint etc.
I should think that a camera from a respected manufacturer like Canon would last more than a year. Sadly, this is not the case. It seems that they are going for the disposable camera market. And worse, they will not honor their warrantee. I contacted Canon about both of these problems and they informed me that I would have to pay them to have it repaired - that these problems are my own fault! I wanted to like this camera, but it has failed me.

Excellent - buy it!
I was torn between the previous model and the current newer one. After carefull consideration, I decided to save a few bucks and went with this previous generation SD1000. The only thing upgraded that I miss is the antishaking feature. It's not really affected my photography. This baby has lots of features for an amateur to use. You can point and shoot. You can also play around with options to customize your photo taking. My favorite is being able to select a color then only that color is intensified in a photo while everything else is turned into black and white!
It's been over a year - not a single problem with this camera. Battery charger works as expected. if you have a PS3, thesame controller charger can be used on this camera to connect to a usb on a PC.
