This flash is a versatile and powerful flash. I own the 7d camera and am able to use the 580 "wirelessly" with my camera.

Pros: High power when you need it, was able to shoot close shots without over exposure, head that fully rotates, Master/Slave capabilities, built-in defuser and "white card", non screw shoe ("twist to lock"), comes with a "mini-stand" and comes with a case.

Cons: Non-yet, first set of batteries still good with over 100 flash shots

All in all great flash especially at the amazon price

I struggled for a while trying to decide between this flash and the 430EX II. In the end I decided to purchase the 580EX II and what a difference it has made to my shooting. It will drastically change your shots. It's easy to use in ETTL and just compensate up and down and bouncing.

If you are trying to decide if you should buy a flash, get one. If you maybe want to get a flash or new glass, get the flash first.

I'm an event photographer so I largely use my EOS cameras indoors. My first shoot with this flash was at a indoor concert with marginal lighting at best. Nearly ALL of my images came back nicely lit and exposed. I still prefer to use a diffuser to soften the powerful light output but even without the diffuser this 580EX II did an amazing job of capturing dancing concert-goers as well as the performers up on stage.

Yes, there is a little bit of sticker shock with this flash, but whether for income (like me) or just to get great images from your EOS system, it's worth it in the long run. I also believe that like all computers or computer run electronics, this flash will out-perform most users. I think buying the tutorial book would be great for many owners since it will help them make the most of their flash. Otherwise, sticking simply to the auto mode will produce great photos.

I am an amateur in the field of digital photography.I bought the speedlite because I found the flash on my Canon 350D was too slow for action shots. I am pleased to say I found the speedlite matched all of the hype in the reviews I read of it. I have had mixed successes in its use. This is no reflection on the speedlite rather it is my pushing and exceeding its boundaries. I look forward in continuing experimenting with it knowing that once I upgrade my camera I may have even more positive results.
